Angry Auto Mechanic
In case you are wondering…yes..that is everyone’s favorite TV auto mechanic Puddy from Seinfeld. Here are something that people do that piss off their auto mechanics.

  1. “Ever since you changed my oil my air conditioning stopped working.”  – Car’s break down all the time.  Things stop working when you haven’t been to the mechanic in a year, or 5 minutes after you pick it up from the repair shop.  For the mechanics it feels like you are blaming them for the problem and that they should discount you on the repair.
  2. “I don’t have the money right now.”  Your bill should be paid when you pick up your car.
  3.  “Can you give me a discount?” – There is a lot that goes into a repair bill and the shop can make it look like you got a discount without charging less.  Asking for a discount might make them charge you more.
  4. “Can you get me through state inspection?” – A State Inspection License is essential to most shops and it is unfair to ask them to jeopardize that.
  5. “Oh Ill just wait for it” – If they say you can wait then this is acceptable, but its not fun for anybody if your repair will take a few hours.  You wouldn’t want your boss sitting next to you all day.
  6. “I bought my own parts” – Repair shops make money off of your parts bill because they take the time to find the right part.
  7. “I heard Maaco paint jobs are only $200.” – Try taking your car to Maaco for a quote and see what they say.  They are cheap, but beware of the cost of the cheap solution.  A properly painted car can cost up to $5000.
  8. “I can’t pick up my car for a few days” or “I can’t afford this repair yet” – If your shop has ample parking this might not be a big deal but for some shops this can occupy valuable parking spots.  If you don’t have the money you should not think that a potential repair warrants taking up a spot in their lot for more than a week.
  9. “There’s not much gas in it” – Cars often need to be moved and test driven while they are at the shop.  Leave them a little gas.
  10. “My insurance company told me to take it somewhere else.” – Usually they are recommending a lesser quality shop and it is your right to get it repaired at your local repair shop.
